CHAPTER ELEVEN

We walked out to the car. Aunt Mattie tottered next to me, the jeweled chain that dangled from the glasses perched on her nose sparkling in the sunlight. She studied the clutched police sketch in her little hand. I watched her slight limp, and worried I had her out and about too much, lately.

I opened the door for her. “You okay?”

“Of course, dear. He seemed a tiddly bit standoffish, didn’t he?” Aunt Mattie said, tilting her head as she studied the portrait.

I climbed into the other side of the car and leaned over to look. “Short hair and a snip of a mustache. He looks like the guy who works the evenings at the pharmacy.”

She frowned. “He could be my mailman.”

I pushed the key into the ignition. “They do say that witness statements are often very faulty.”

“Not always. Last week on Prime Crime they were sharing how many crimes have been solved thanks to witnesses. I think this is just a bland, generic picture. No real details or anything that stands out. They don’t even have an actual hair or eye color.” Aunt Mattie pointed to the blank spots on the details section at the bottom.

“Strange,” I agreed.

“It’s like they’re not even trying.” She heaved a frustrated breath.

Her sigh was a touch heavier than the situation called for. I cast an anxious eye in her direction. “What are you thinking?”

“Nothing I want to talk with you about right now.”

Well, that gave me a pause. “What’s the matter?”

“Nothing, nothing.” She pressed her lips primly together. I knew that expression. The harder I tried to get her to talk, the more stubborn she’d become.

The car ride home was suddenly quiet. Upon reaching her house, I found my bag in the trunk filled with the change of clothes that I’d brought. I needed to get some cleaning done around my aunt’s and had no intention of doing so in slacks.

“I’m going to make us some tea,” Aunt Mattie called as I headed to the bathroom. I shucked off my clothes and shimmied into yoga pants and an oversized tee. It had an image of Santa on it checking over his naughty list. Made me smile every time I put it on. My name had to be on there somewhere.

Aunt Mattie wasn’t a messy person, so it didn’t take very long to do a bit of dusting and to vacuum and mop the floors. The rest she would usually tend on her own as she bustled about. It had taken a lot just to convince her it was better if I did the full floor cleanings and dusting high places. I had also successfully taken over cleaning the shower and tub, scrubbing the toilets, and doing other jobs that made me uncomfortable for her to do.

Eventually, I joined my aunt in the living room. She had a little tray with two cups of hot tea and a floral plate of what she liked to call biscuits. Someone else might label them sandwich cookies from an off brand.
